SMART KORAT GREEN CITY : DEVELOPING CITY AND COMMUNITY TOWARD SUSTIANABILITY BASED ON GREEN ECONOMY IN NAKHONRATCHASIMA PROVINCE

Abstract

This research aims to 1) study the knowledge of developing cities and communities towards sustainability based on a green economy in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, 2) examine the process of driving the green economy concept into practice for sustainable development of cities and communities in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, and 3) explore guidelines for developing cities and communities towards sustainability based on a green economy, aiming for Smart Korat Green City. This research employs a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative field research and action research. The research tools used include interviews, focus group discussions, and workshops under the Smart Korat Green City project: Developing Cities and Communities towards Sustainability Based on a Green Economy in Nakhon Ratchasima Province. The research findings reveal that. The knowledge for developing cities and communities towards sustainability in Nakhon Ratchasima Province lies in an economy that aligns with nature and ecosystems, adhering to the principles of sufficiency economy and social justice. Community participation in decision-making and the protection of natural resources is crucial to ensure long-term sustainability and resilience. Development must be consistent with local culture and context to achieve a truly green economy. The process of driving the green economy concept into practice for sustainable development in Nakhon Ratchasima Province consists of eight key steps: creating an understanding of the Smart Green City concept, analyzing the community’s conditions, conducting a SWOT analysis, assigning development responsibilities, exchanging opinions, building public and governmental understanding, implementing the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle, and coordinating with external organizations. These processes require cooperation from all sectors and systematic planning to achieve effective and sustainable development. The development of cities and communities toward sustainability based on a green economy to achieve Smart Korat Green City consists of four main strategies: 1) fostering awareness and responsibility, 2) building a food-secure city capable of disaster resilience, 3) implementing tools and mechanisms for green space management, and 4) recognizing local wisdom and fostering social empowerment. This approach must begin with building understanding and participation from all sectors, while also focusing on developing infrastructure, managing spaces, creating networks, and addressing pollution. Clear vision, long-term planning, and the application of technology aligned with local context will ensure the sustainable success of Smart Korat Green City.
