DEVELOPMENT OF SQ4R MODEL TO IMPROVE READING LITERACY OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

The objectives of these research were 1) to examine the factors affecting reading literacy of undergraduate students in Guangxi Province, 2) to develop SQ4R Model to improve reading literacy of undergraduate students in Guangxi Minzu University and 3) to study the results of SQ4R Model to improve reading literacy of undergraduate students in Guangxi Minzu University.Phases were carried out to answer research objectives 1, 2, 3. The population of Phase 1 were150 former students and 3 lecturers of the Reading and Appreciation course in the 1st semester of the 2023 academic year from 3 colleges in Guangxi Province. The target group of Phase 2 were 3 experts, and the sample group of Phase 3 were 40 students who enrolled in the Reading and Appreciation Course of Guangxi Minzu University. The research instruments were 1) a set of questionnaires for students, and interview for lecturers. 2) a set of questionnaires for conformity instructional model, 3) lesson plans using SQ4R model, and 4) Pretest and Posttest. Data were analyzed by percentage, mean, standard deviation. The results revealed the following are the factors to improve Undergraduate students’ reading literacy in Guangxi Province were internal and external factors. The former included Knowledge and Skills, Psychology and Physical, Attitude while the latter involved Method of Teaching, Materials and Environment, the SQ4R model to improve reading literacy of undergraduate students in Guangxi Minzu University include 5 components: 1) Principle and Rationale, 2) Objectives, 3) Contents, 4) Method of teaching & materials and 5) Evaluation. The model was 100% confirmed to conformed to utility, feasibility, propriety, and accuracy standards as assessed by 5 specialists, and after interviewing three lecturers, key factors influencing undergraduate students' reading literacy in Guangxi Province are identified. Internal factors encompass teachers' knowledge, teaching skills, and continuous training in Reading and Appreciation Courses. Personal aspects such as physical and mental health, family responsibilities, and educators' beliefs significantly impact student literacy. External factors involve teaching skills, strategies, and methods, emphasizing the effectiveness of the SQ4R model and mind mapping techniques. Multimedia resources, small class sizes, conducive classroom environments, active discussions, and refined evaluation methods are crucial for fostering reading literacy. Overall, both internal and external factors play pivotal roles in shaping students' reading proficiency.
