DEVELOPMENT OF SCAFFOLDING TEACHING AND TASK-BASED LEARNING INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL TO ENHANCE ENGLISH READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

The objectives of this research were 1) to examine the factors for enhancing English reading comprehension ability for undergraduate students.2) to develop the scaffolding teaching and task-based learning instructional model to enhance English reading comprehension ability for undergraduate students and 3) to study the results of implementing the scaffolding teaching and task-based learning instructional model to enhance English reading comprehension ability for undergraduate students The population sample group in Phase 1 were 130 former students and 3 lecturers from Guangxi University of Science and Technology. There were 3 experts to confirm the scaffolding teaching and task-based learning instructional model in Phase 2. There were 46 students from Guangxi University of Science and Technology by cluster random sampling in Phase 3. The research instruments were
1) a set of questionnaires for students and interview for lecturers. 2) Set of questionnaires for confirming instructional model .3) Lesson plan and 4) Testing paper. Data were statistically analyzed by percentage, mean, standard deviation and T-test.The results found that: There are two main factors that affect the English reading comprehension ability of undergraduate students: internal and external factors. The internal factors include learning attitude, learning motivation, learning engagement, and learning satisfaction, while the external factors involve teaching methods, teaching activities, learning tasks, peer cooperation, and the overall learning atmosphere, and in this study, internal factors, including physical and psychological aspects, significantly influence students' English reading comprehension abilities. Lecturers emphasize active participation and engagement with course content, highlighting the importance of challenging tasks and diversified teaching methods to stimulate interest. External factors such as effective teaching methods, well-designed learning tasks, engaging teaching activities, peer cooperation, and a positive learning atmosphere are crucial in enhancing reading comprehension. The analysis underscores the importance of students' attitude, motivation, engagement, and satisfaction, while also emphasizing the role of cooperative learning and a relaxed atmosphere in alleviating anxiety and promoting language use for improved reading comprehension.
