Factors associated with Oral Health Related Quality of Life in the Ethnic Elderly Phan District, Chiang Rai Province

This cross-sectional analytical study examined the factors associated with the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among 355 elderly ethnics in Pan District, Chiang Rai Province. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics Chi-square test Fisher’s exact test and Multiple logistic regression analysis. The results revealed that lifestyle habits, healthcare access, and social support significantly influence OHRQoL. Individuals who never consumed alcohol had 2.26 times better OHRQoL than consumers (ORadj = 2.26). Conversely, those with a history of betel chewing were 0.25 times less likely to have a good OHRQoL compared to non-chewers (ORadj = 0.25, 95% CI = 0.09 – 0.77). Dental Services: Lack of dental service utilization within the past six months reduced the likelihood of a good OHRQoL by 0.28 times (ORadj = 0.28, 95% CI = 0.11 – 0.71). Social Support: High and moderate family support increased OHRQoL by 3.08 and 3.61 times, respectively. Notably, moderate and high support from friends showed even stronger correlations, increasing OHRQoL by 6.51 and 3.53 times, respectively, compared to those with low support. Conclusion: Alcohol abstinence, avoiding betel chewing, regular dental visits, and strong social networks are critical drivers of oral health wellbeing. These findings provide a framework for developing sustainable healthcare initiatives and community-based support systems tailored to the specific needs of elderly ethnic populations.
