Development of a Manual for Preparing Patients before Receiving Anesthesia to Reduce the Incidence of Patient Unpreparedness at Khuan Khanun Hospital

Abstract

The objective of this research was to develop a manual for patients and unprepared patient preparation before receiving anesthesia in order to reduce the incidence of abstinence postponement of surgery and complications. The research and development process consists of 4 steps: 1) literature review, 2) development of the manual outline, 3) content validation and suitability of the draft manual, and 4) conclusions, evaluation, and revision of the manual.  The content validity was verified by 3 experts and assessed by 10 nurses taking care of their patients. The main contents of the manual consist of 1)   instructions for using the manual 2) preparation of patients physically and mentally, and preparation for specific diseases, including medicines that patients should refrain from on the morning of surgery and medicines that should be added before surgery and 3) reference documents.  The sample was patients who received surgical services in Khuan Khanun Hospital and received anesthesia from October 2022 to September 2023. The providing care team is a multidisciplinary team consisting of anesthesiologists, nurse anesthesiologists, surgeons, ward nurses, pharmacists, and medical technologists. The instrument used in the research was a patient preparation manual for anesthesia. The results of the study found that after following the patient preparation manual for anesthesia, the incidence of abstinence and postponement of surgery decreased from 1.63% in 2022 to 0.00%.  The incidence of patients being unprepared for anesthesia decreased from 28.69% in 2022 to 16.28%.   According to the luminaries and manual users, the manual is practical and easy to understand.
