DEMOCRACY IN THE DHAMMIC SOCIALISM PRINCIPLES OF BUDDHADASA BHIKKHU

Abstract

This article focuses on analyzing the concept of democracy based on the principles of Dhammic Socialism as proposed by Buddhadasa Bhikkhu. It highlights that a truly democratic governance should be grounded in Dhamma (moral principles) to achieve a balance between individual freedom and justice for the broader society. Buddhadasa Bhikkhu introduced "Dhammic Socialism," emphasizing the importance of prioritizing collective well-being over personal gain. This approach encourages a society where members are compassionate and supportive of one another, fostering peace and virtue as foundational elements of communal life. Integrating Dhammic Socialism with democracy promotes societal support for both individual rights and social order, as well as mutual respect among citizens. In Buddhadasa's view, "Dhammic" means embedding Dhamma as a foundation for creating a fair governance system that steers society in a morally sound direction and reduces conflict. This idea emphasizes fostering morality and ethics among citizens while preparing them to live together peacefully, thus minimizing societal conflicts through mutual respect and civic responsibility. The incorporation of Dhamma as a foundation of democracy further strengthens unity and positive interactions within a diverse society. Buddhadasa Bhikkhu pointed out that this type of democracy not only secures individual freedom but also leads to a society that is unified, stable, and enduring.
