COMPANIONATE SUPERVISION: THE VALUE OF BEING A 'TEACHER OF TEACHERS' IN THE 21ST CENTURY
Main Article Content
Abstract
This academic article presents the concept and value of companionate supervision as a vital approach to teacher development in the 21st century. Rooted in the Buddhist principle of Kalyanamitra-Dhamma (Virtuous Friendship) and integrated with key educational theories—Collaborative Learning Theory, Creative Coaching Theory, and Experiential Learning Theory—this approach emphasizes collaboration, trust, positive support, and inspiration rather than control. Such supervision fosters teachers’ confidence, motivation, and readiness for continuous improvement. Moreover, it plays a crucial role in establishing a collaborative learning culture within schools, thereby positively influencing educational quality. The article examines successful case studies, including Ban Khok Klang Bo Lhub School, the Sisaket Primary Educational Service Area Office 3, and Satri Pak Phanang School, the Nakhon Si Thammarat Secondary Educational Service Area Office, all of which implemented companionate supervision models and achievd significant improvements in teaching effectiveness and teacher satisfaction. The study concludes by proposing a “Companionate Supervision Model for Sustainable Teacher Development in the Thai Context,” structured as a Participatory Development Cycle. This cycle comprises building trust, engaging in coaching and reflection, applying practices in real settings, fostering collaborative learning, and conducting continuous evaluation and improvement. The model provides a sustainable professional support system tailored to the Thai educational context, contributing to the long-term enhancement of both teacher quality and student learning outcomes.
