Abstract

This research proposed to study disruption in Thai media landscape, especially in Thai broadcasting and film industries. The research relies on a qualitative approach, covering document research and analysis of data on technology determinism theory, globalization and glocalization theory, OTT and streaming concepts, broadcasting, and the film value chain.

It was found that OTT and streaming are the big change and great disruption to broadcasting industry and film industry around the world. When streaming platforms like Netflix, YouTube, and Facebook became the key players and influencers in broadcasting and the film value chain, streaming platforms also changed producer and audience behavior to watch contents on platforms, so they probably monopolize broadcasting and the film market in the future.

For Thailand, law and regulation for managing OTT and streaming platforms have a gap because of the unclear scope and function of regulators. Thailand still has no solutions or directions to regulate content creation in OTT and streaming. This research will provide practices, policies, and guidelines from global sources for Thai regulators and related organizations to apply in the Thai content industry.
