Abstract

This qualitative research aims to study 1) the historical background of the "Prakas Samakkhi" Nang Pramo Thai shadow play troupe in Roi Et Province and 2) the keyboard performance techniques used in their traditional performances. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observations, and field recordings. The key informants included the troupe leader, administrator, and two expert musicians. The findings reveal that the "Prakas Samakkhi" troupe is a longstanding folk performance group in Northeastern Thailand. Its unique characteristics include the integration of Southern Thai shadow puppetry, Isan "Mor Lam" vocal arts, and contemporary music. The keyboard plays a central role in shaping musical ambience, enhancing emotions, and connecting the narration, vocal segments, and puppet movements. Performance techniques include simulating traditional instruments such as the khaen, wode, and phu-thai flute, using folk-style chord voicings, producing natural sound effects, and employing semi-improvised playing styles to synchronize with the live narration. Furthermore, the troupe’s keyboardists function as mediators between Western and traditional instruments, facilitating dynamic musical interaction and group cohesion. This study contributes to the systematization of contemporary folk music knowledge and may be developed into learning resources or local educational media. It also supports the sustainable transmission of traditional performance skills to the next generation of musicians.
