THE DEVELOPMENT OF PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT IN PRACTICING SPECIAL NEED SKILLS PROGRAM USING HOME BASED FOR CHIDREN WITH AUTISM

Abstract

The objectives of this study are: 1) to study the problem of participation of parents in developing specific skills for children with autism 2) To develop a program to involve parents in developing specific skills for children with autism using home as a base. 3) To study parents' satisfaction with the parental participation program. Target group specifically selected were 16 children with autism and their parents receiving services at the Special Education Center region 9.. Tools used in the research included: 1) group discussion recording form 2) parent participation program for developing specific skills for children with autism 3) specific skills assessment for children with autism. 4) questionnaire on parents' satisfaction with the parental participation program. Data were analyzed using basic statistics. and content analysis This research has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of Khon Kaen University, number HE 663106. The research results found that 1. Problems with parental participation are as follows: the parents who come to receive services are old, the parents are separated, causing the child to lack a primary caretaker, parents have other workloads, making them unable to care and bring children to receive services continuously, lack of budget to take children to receive additional services from other sources and there are few teaching material. 2. The program for parental participation in developing necessary skills specifically for children with autism using the home based has 5 steps: 1) assess the child's ability to study individual problems. 2) meeting personnel and parents to identify problems and synthesize details of the problems. 3) Design activities, create guidelines for using the program and implement the guidelines by involving parents 4) evaluate, summarize results, and follow up. 5) improve and develop the program and support system ncluding creating an environment that is conducive to learning,supporting learning media and roles of involved parties. 3. Parents were at highest level of satisfaction with the participation program( = 4.70 , S.D. = 0.46)
