Political leadership in Buddhist dimensions: Studying the role of virtuous people in developing virtuous leaders

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the concept of political leadership in the Buddhist dimension, focusing on the role of Sappurisadhamma in developing ethical and moral leaders in governance. The seven principles of Sappurisadhamma—Dhammaññuta (understanding of principles), Atthaññuta (understanding of consequences), Attaññuta (self-awareness), Mattaññuta (moderation), Kālaññuta (timing awareness), Parisannñuta (social awareness), and Puggalaññuta (understanding of individuals)—serve as ethical foundations that enable political leaders to make prudent decisions. This research adopts a qualitative approach by analyzing Buddhist scriptures and political leadership theories. The findings suggest that Sappurisadhamma has the potential to cultivate responsible, transparent, and efficient leadership in governance. Additionally, these principles help build public trust and contribute to a fair and peaceful political system. This paper concludes that applying Sappurisadhamma in political leadership can provide a moral and ethical framework suitable for Thai society.
