DEVELOPMENT OF CRITICAL READING SKILLS IN THE 21ST CENTURY USING THE FOLKTALE “THE LEGEND OF PHADAENG NANG AI”

Abstract

The objectives of this research were 1) to develop critical reading skills in the 21^st  century  using the folktale “The Legend of Phadaeng Nang Ai” with the SQ5R instructional technique, and 2) to compare the test results measuring critical reading ability between pretest and posttest. The sample was 55 students, which was selected based on purposive sampling. Research instruments consisted of 1) TQF: Hed 3, Local Literature Course, using the SQ5R instructional technique, 2) 60-item critical reading ability test of the folktale “The Legend of Phadaeng Nang Ai”, comprising pretest and posttest, and 3) Rating-scale learning plan quality assessment form. The results indicated that the quality of the designed learning management plan for TQF: Hed 3 (Course Specification) was evaluated by experts at a high level with a mean score of 3.80. Moreover, students’ pretest and posttest mean scores were 28.45 and 53.37. When  the pretest and posttest scores were compared, students’ posttest score was higher than pretest score with a statistical significance level of .05.
