Developing Communicative English Language Teaching for Home Stay Hosts at Ban Na Wai Noi School, Kok Sathon Subdistrict, Dan Sai District, Loei Province

Abstract

This objectives of this study were to (1) investigate the problems and needs related to English communication skills among students at Ban Na Wai Noi School and the context of their community as a home stay tourism destination; (2) develop an English curriculum and practice exercises for students in the role of Home Stay Hosts that integrate language knowledge with local culture and wisdom; (3) compare and evaluate students' English communication skills before and after using the developed curriculum; and (4) study the satisfaction of students, teachers, and parents with the learning activities. The study focuses on developing essential communication skills for real-life situations within a community with high tourism potential. The target population was 26 elementary students from Ban Na Wai Noi School. This research utilized an action research methodology. The research instruments included a set of practice exercises, a pre-test/post-test, and a satisfaction questionnaire to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. The research process involved an analysis of the communicative needs of the students and community, which then led to the development of a curriculum and exercises focused on practical, simulated situations. The findings indicate that students' English communication skills significantly improved after participating in the project. In addition, students and parents expressed satisfaction with the learning activities, noting that the program helped students feel more confident using the language and recognized its benefits for promoting community tourism.
