Enhancement of Budda-Dharma-Based Peaceful Community for Khai Bok Wan Community

Abstract

The objectives of the research were to study the strengthening of peace in the community, based upon the principles of Buddhism, to study the general conditions of Khai Bok Wan Community, and to analyze the ways on strengthening of peace in the community, based on the Buddhist principle of Saraniya-dhamma (the states of conciliation or the states of fraternal living). The study was conducted through the qualitative research, analyzing and describing the data by explanation.

            The research findings were as follows:

1. 1. The strengthening of the peaceful community, based on the Buddhist principle of Saraniya-dhamma, was found to be a mechanism to enhance relationship within the community, to harmonize the community, and to reinforce the new values on agreement and accordance, based upon trust and generosity withing the community. The self-assistance, based on Saraniya-dhamma, was sustainable for the community members. According to such a mechanism, it was presented as the BOKWAN model in accordance with Saraniya-dhamma as follows: B (acts of bond or Metta-kaya-kamma in Pali), O (words of generosity or Metta-vaci-kamma in Pali), K (line of peaceful thinking or (Metta-mano-kamma in Pali), W (worth of community service (Sadharanabhogi in Pali), A (conformity of behavior or Silasamanyata in Pali), and N (consensus or Ditthisamanyata in Pali). The model was utilized to strengthen the peaceful community under the concerned context.


2. 2. The study of general conditions of Khai Bok Wan Community revealed that Khai Bok Wan was a community with the diversity of ethnic groups, who lived together with the Buddhist monks, the Buddhist temples and the Buddhist teachings as the center of mental socialization, functioning to coordinate and associate relationship with the community through activities, related to the community and Buddhism.

The analysis of Saraniya-dhamma-based strengthening of peace in the community disclosed that Saraniya-dhamma was implemented to encourage the people in the community public-minded to assist each other, to recommend the community to implement Saraniya-dhamma to enhance and develop the life of people in the community, to coordinate to increase their confidence in the peaceful way to make peace in the community, to associate to move out the activities inside the community creatively, to cooperate to solve the problems and to step over different opinions with the Buddhist principles, and to agree on maintaining the ways of customs and traditions in accordance with the progress in the society and technology.
