Abstract

This research article has objectives: 1) to study the tradition of offering candles in Buddhist scriptures; 2) to study the tradition of offering candles in Moei Wadi District, Roi Et Province; and 3) to study the dynamics of the tradition of offering candles in Moei Wadi District, Roi Et Province. It is a qualitative research method, studying textual documents and interviewing 25 key informants (monks/individuals). The research findings are presented using descriptive methods.

The results of research found that: The offering of candles during the Buddhist Lent is a tradition rooted in the Buddha's precept requiring monks to reside in seclusion during the rainy season to study Buddhist doctrines and practice meditation. Villagers offer candles as a source of light for religious activities, thus having both physical and symbolic meanings: representing the light of Dharma and faith in the Triple Gem. Later, the tradition developed into a cultural activity reflecting love and devotion to Buddhism, while also preserving the spiritual values of the community. In Moei Wadi District, Roi Et Province, the tradition of offering candles plays a significant role in both religious and social aspects. Villagers collectively offer candles during the Buddhist Lent to create merit and bring auspiciousness. The use of natural materials and community cooperation promote unity and the preservation of local culture. Although there have been adaptations, such as the use of synthetic candles and online promotion, the core religious essence remains steadfast. This tradition also serves as a transitional space that impacts people's minds, behaviors, and relationships, fostering a sense of community, revitalizing beliefs in Karma, and reflecting local wisdom and creativity. The ritual is therefore not merely an external form, but an integration of religion, art, and culture that connects generations and perpetuates spiritual values.
