Gender and Sexual Diversity in Social Studies Education: Challenges within Thailand’s Socio-Cultural and Educational Contexts
Main Article Content
Abstract
This academic article aims to study the problems and challenges of gender diversity in educational institutions within the dimensions of Thai society, culture, and education. This documentary research involves collecting and analyzing data from academic papers and related documents at both domestic and international levels. Content analysis and interpretation are then conducted within the Thai social and cultural context. The study finds that gender diversity issues in educational institutions do not arise solely from individuals but result from a clash of social values between traditional and contemporary concepts. This leads to gender-diverse students facing stigmatization, discrimination, and limitations in expressing their identity. Simultaneously, teachers and educational personnel still lack the understanding and appropriate practices to manage learning environments that respect differences. Furthermore, the current education system and related policies have yet to concretely accommodate gender diversity. To further contribute to the body of knowledge gained from this study, this article proposes viewing gender diversity as a cultural learning phenomenon. This perspective falls within a framework of coexistence and respect for gender diversity in educational institutions across three levels: individual, school culture, and policy. By emphasizing understanding, acceptance, and human dignity, this approach aims to develop educational institutions into safe spaces that promote equitable learning for all students.
