Abstract

This article explores the role of youth counselors in monitoring and offering essential guidance to their peers, under the close supervision and guidance of mentor teachers. The youth counselor is expected to embody key characteristics and skills essential for assisting fellow students in realistically understanding and addressing their own challenges. The three core competencies crucial for independent problem-solving include knowledge about counseling, a positive attitude towards counseling, and the ability to provide effective advice to friends. Additionally, the promotion of competency in applying Buddhist principles, particularly the Kalyanamittham 7 can empower students and fellow counselors to apply compassionate and supportive approaches when assisting friends seeking counsel. This involves approaching suffering with kindness, extending good wishes, and caring for individuals experiencing happiness or challenges. By creating a warm, safe, and reliable environment, counselors can effectively explain, advise, and motivate, fostering clarity and encouragement. A skilled advisor is one who actively listens, demonstrates patience, and invites a cheerful and positive atmosphere, ready to address questions without boredom.
