THE DYNAMICS OF THE THAI TERRITORY: UNDER THE TOKYO CONVENTION TO THE SETTLEMENT OF THE CASE BETWEEN THAILAND AND FRANCE

Abstract

This academic article examines the developments in international politics and law related to the “dynamics of Thai territory,” reflecting the transformation of Siam’s sovereignty and territorial boundaries under pressure from Western colonialism, particularly its relations with France during the 19th to the mid-20th centuries. From the “Tokyo Convention”—the symbolic starting point for negotiations—to the “Settlement Agreement” after World War II, this article examines historical, international political, and legal contexts, drawing on world-system theory to explore Thailand’s transition from a state of restricted sovereignty to a reclaimed nation-state in the post-war era. This academic article demonstrates that the “dynamics of Thai territory” is not simply a history of territorial loss or regain, but also a dynamic of the Thai state’s efforts to maintain its independence and dignity in a world beset by hegemonic pressures. It also reflects diplomatic wisdom and the ability to use the “force of transformation” to sustain national security. Furthermore, it aims to open up academic space for a deeper understanding of Thai history, viewing territory not only as a physical border. But as a symbol of power, bargaining and the identity of the Thai state that still exists in the changing currents of modern global geopolitics.
