AI INTEGRATION IN PALI LANGUAGE EDUCATION: ENHANCING CONCENTRATION AND WISDOM THROUGH THE FOUR IDDHIPADAS

Abstract

This academic article explores approaches to integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Pali language teaching and learning in order to enhance the effectiveness of pedagogical processes and address the needs of 21st-century learners. The study employs the conceptual framework of the “Four Iddhipadas” Chanda (aspiration), Viriya (effort), Citta (concentration), and Vimamsa (investigation) as guiding principles for the design and evaluation of AI applications in education. The primary aim is to foster both concentration (Samādhi) and wisdom (Paññā) through the purposeful use of technology. Findings indicate that AI integration can support Pali language education in multiple dimensions, such as developing automatic translation systems, facilitating grammatical analysis, generating interactive learning materials, and providing personalized feedback. However, effective implementation requires alignment with the Four Iddhipadas, ensuring that learning is not limited to knowledge transmission but also cultivates inspiration, perseverance, focused attention, and systematic reflection all of which are essential to learners’ inner development. The article concludes that strategically incorporating AI into Pali language education can promote a balanced cultivation of concentration and wisdom. Moreover, it highlights a pathway for bridging modern technological innovation with Buddhist intellectual heritage, thereby fostering sustainable learning that is both academically rigorous and ethically grounded.
