Difficulties of monks living in Thai society

Abstract

Monks play a significant role in the religious and cultural aspects of Thai society. However, living as a monk in the modern era faces various challenges resulting from social and economic changes, which have impacted public faith and support. These challenges include increased societal expectations and issues regarding the image of the clergy, arising from the behavior of certain individuals. Furthermore, the use of technology and social media has added complexity to maintaining morality and monastic principles in the digital age. This article aims to analyze the factors contributing to the difficulties faced by monks in Thai society by examining the current state of Buddhism within the context of societal changes. The findings reveal that monks encounter several challenges, including: 1. The context of monastic life in Thai society, 2. Economic challenges, 3. Cultural and social challenges, and 4. Strategies for addressing these issues. This academic paper proposes collaborative approaches between monks and communities to solve problems and enhance the role of monks in the modern era. The goal is to ensure that Buddhism remains a spiritual cornerstone of Thai society and continues to play a sustainable role in the lives of the people.
