INTEGRATING LOCAL WISDOM WITH THE CORE CURRICULUM TO ENHANCE STUDENTS’ IDENTITY AND LOCAL PRIDE

Abstract

In today’s rapidly changing society shaped by globalization, information technology, and mass culture, education plays a vital role in developing 21st-century competencies among students. However, a persistent challenge is the increasing detachment of learners from their local communities, resulting in weakened cultural identity and diminishing local pride. This paper aims to propose strategies for integrating local wisdom into Thailand’s Basic Education Core Curriculum by applying the conceptual frameworks of Place-Based Education, Experiential Learning, and Project-Based Learning. A synthesis of academic literature indicates that systematic integration of local wisdom helps students gain meaningful learning experiences, bridging classroom knowledge with real-life contexts. It enhances key competencies such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving while fostering a sense of belonging and pride in local identity. Furthermore, it strengthens school-community partnerships as educational stakeholders. The paper concludes that integrating local wisdom is not merely an addition of cultural activities, but a holistic curriculum development approach that balances global standards and local relevance, supporting students to become rooted, competent citizens capable of living meaningfully in contemporary society.
