Abstract

Sustainability plays a crucial role in promoting the efficient and responsible development of the tourism and hospitality industry. This study aimed (1) to examine the relationship between hotel types and management and governance practices for sustainability and (2) to analyze governance-related management practices among different types of hotels in Thailand. A quantitative research design was employed using a structured questionnaire to collect data from 65 hotels located in four major tourism destinations in Thailand: Bangkok, Phuket, Chonburi, and Surat Thani. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency and percentage, together with the Chi-square test to examine the relationships between variables.

The findings revealed that most hotels have adopted sustainability management and governance practices, particularly in monitoring resource consumption, establishing sustainability committees, and communicating sustainability initiatives to customers. Furthermore, significant relationships were found between hotel type and several governance practices. City Hotels showed a significant relationship with sustainable investment, particularly in upgrading equipment and adopting clean energy technologies. Full Service Hotels demonstrated significant relationships with the establishment of sustainability committees, continuous monitoring through sustainability review meetings, and investment in sustainability initiatives. Among all hotel categories, Luxury Hotels, with their outstanding service quality and comprehensive management systems, demonstrated the highest level of sustainability implementation. The findings suggest that effective governance and management practices are essential mechanisms for strengthening sustainability and enhancing the long-term competitiveness of the Thai hospitality industry.
