DEVELOPING ENGLISH VOCABULARY LEARNING ACHIEVEMENT AND RETENTION USING STAD COOPERATIVE LEARNING COMBINED WITH CATEGORY GAMES FOR JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Main Article Content
Abstract
The purposes of this research were to: 1) compare junior high school students’ English vocabulary learning achievement before and after learning through Student Teams-Achievement Divisions (STAD) cooperative learning combined with category games; and 2) investigate students’ English vocabulary retention by comparing the immediate post-test scores with the delayed post-test scores two weeks after the intervention. This study employed a one-group pretest-posttest design with a delayed post-test. The target group consisted of 20 junior high school students at Mary Witthaya Saint Mary School in the first semester of the 2026 academic year, selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments were: 1) three lesson plans based on STAD cooperative learning combined with category games, totaling 10 instructional hours; and 2) a 20-item multiple-choice English vocabulary achievement test covering remembering, meaning comprehension, and application. The data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and dependent samples t-test.
The findings revealed that: 1) the students’ English vocabulary learning achievement after the implementation was significantly higher than before the implementation at the .05 level. The pre-test mean score was 11.25 with a standard deviation of 2.10, while the post-test mean score was 14.53 with a standard deviation of 1.16; and 2) the students demonstrated English vocabulary retention, as the immediate post-test and the delayed post-test administered two weeks later were not significantly different at the .05 level. The delayed post-test mean score was 14.23 with a standard deviation of 1.21. These findings indicate that integrating STAD cooperative learning with category games can enhance learners’ vocabulary achievement and retention through peer support, repeated retrieval, semantic categorization, and meaningful use of vocabulary.
