A STUDY OF CONDUCTING KITTI KRUEMANEE’S CELESTIAL AND TERRESTRIAL DANCES FOR WIND BAND

Abstract

Research article aimed to: 1) study and analyze the musical structure and interpretative approaches of the composition; 2) examine conducting approaches and the conductor’s communicative gestures; and 3) investigate methods for achieving balance among instrumental sections within the wind Band. This study employed a qualitative research methodology through the examination of academic literature, related research studies, the musical score of the composition, and conducting concepts for wind Band, together with a direct analysis of the composition itself.

The findings revealed that the composition is a contemporary work that reflects the integration of Western compositional concepts with Thai musical identity through the use of melodic materials influenced by Thai musical idioms, orchestral color design, and the development of musical content in a through-composed form. These elements create continuous changes in mood, timbre, and musical intensity throughout the work.

Regarding conducting practice, the study found that conductors must thoroughly understand the relationships among musical structure, melody, harmony, and the roles of each instrumental section in order to determine appropriate conducting gestures for the musical characteristics of each passage. Furthermore, conductors must effectively manage the balance among instrumental lines to ensure the clarity of the principal melody and the overall cohesion of the ensemble. The knowledge gained from this research can be applied to the study, analysis, and performance of contemporary Thai compositions for wind band. It may also serve as a guideline for conductors, music students, and scholars in enhancing the performance and interpretation of contemporary music within the Thai musical context.
