THE EFFECTS OF USING GAMES-BASED LEARNING TO PROMOTE ENGLISH LISTENING SKILLS FOR THE 7TH GRADERS
Main Article Content
Abstract
The objectives of this research were (1) to compare the English listening skills of Grade 7 (Mathayomsuksa 1) students before and after learning through Game-Based Learning (GBL), and (2) to investigate the satisfaction of Grade 7 students toward the implementation of Game-Based Learning. The sample consisted of 40 Grade 7 students from class 1/9 of a school in Ratchaburi Province, enrolled in the second semester of the 2025 academic year. The sample was selected through cluster random sampling using the classroom as the sampling unit. This study employed experimental research using a One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design over a period of four weeks, comprising eight 50-minute periods (two periods per week). The research instruments included (1) four lesson plans for Game-Based Learning to develop English listening skills, covering topics related to buying bus tickets, airport check-in, flight announcements, and transport announcements, designed based on Rixon's (1986) three-stage listening instruction framework (Pre-listening, While-listening, and Post-listening); (2) an English listening skills test consisting of 30 items; and (3) a five-point Likert rating scale satisfaction questionnaire (Likert, 1932). Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and paired samples t-test.
The findings revealed that (1) the post-test English listening scores of Grade 7 students (M = 20.98, S.D. = 3.23) were significantly higher than their pre-test scores (M = 14.88, S.D. = 2.76) at the .01 level of statistical significance (t = 19.071, p < .001), with an average increase of 6.10 points, equivalent to 20.33% of the total score; and (2) the overall satisfaction of Grade 7 students toward Game-Based Learning was at a high level (M = 3.90, S.D. = 0.74). When considering each aspect, the highest mean was in Content (M = 4.17), followed by Listening Skill Benefits (M = 3.94), Instructional Activity Design (M = 3.90), Language (M = 3.87), and Audio Quality (M = 3.64), respectively.
