Abstract

This academic article aims to examine the integration of Buddhist principles in developing a holistic care model for palliative patients at the end of life. The study employed documentary research and content analysis of Buddhist scriptures, academic texts, scholarly documents, and related research on palliative care to synthesize knowledge regarding the application of Buddhist teachings in end-of-life palliative patients. The focus was placed on providing comprehensive care that addresses physical, psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions in-order-to enhance the quality of life of patients during their final stage of life.

The findings revealed that key Buddhist principles, including the Four Noble Truths, the Three Characteristics of Existence (Tilakkhana), the Noble Eightfold Path, mindfulness, meditation, and loving-kindness and compassion (Metta-Karuna), can be effectively applied to palliative care. These principles help patients understand the nature of life, accept impermanence, reduce anxiety, fear, and psychological suffering, and cultivate inner peace. Furthermore, they encourage the active involvement of healthcare professionals, family members, Buddhist monks, and community networks in providing comprehensive care across physical, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions.

The study highlights that integrating Buddhist principles into palliative care serves as an important approach for developing a holistic healthcare model that is consistent with the social and cultural context of Thai society. Such integration contributes to improving the quality of life of patients and their families, enabling patients to face the final stage of life with peace, dignity, and meaning. It also provides a foundation for the sustainable development of holistic palliative care practices.
