BUDDHIST INTEGRATION: A PATH TO BALANCED LIVING IN THE MODERN WORLD
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article examines the concept of "Buddhist Integration" as both a conceptual framework and a practical approach applicable to human life in the modern world, in a manner consistent with the realities of contemporary society. Against the backdrop of rapid transformation in technology, economics, and social structure changes that generate considerable pressure, stress, and psychological imbalance for large numbers of people the article analyzes the role of Buddhist teachings in fostering equilibrium between external and inner development, with an emphasis on the application of the Dhamma to everyday life rather than its confinement to ritual practice or theoretical discourse alone. The study employs documentary research methodology, drawing on Buddhist canonical and commentarial literature principally the Tipiṭaka and related exegetical texts to analyze and synthesize a conception of Buddhist Integration suited to the modern context. The principal teachings examined are sati (mindfulness), majjhimā paṭipadā (the Middle Way), idappaccayatā (conditionality), upekkhā (equanimity), and the sikkhattaya (the Threefold Training of morality, concentration, and wisdom). Each of these principles carries substantial potential for cultivating psychological stability, alleviating suffering, and developing the wisdom through which human beings may comprehend life as it truly is.
The findings indicate that Buddhist Integration constitutes a holistic framework that effectively bridges Buddhist teachings and the lived experience of human beings in the modern world. The cultivation of mindfulness and conduct in accordance with the Middle Way enables individuals to develop self-awareness and situational sensitivity, thereby reducing extremism in the pursuit of material gratification. Concurrently, an understanding of conditionality and the wise practice of non-attachment equips individuals to meet the impermanence and uncertainty inherent in life with composure and resilience. The article concludes that Buddhist Integration offers a meaningful and significant path toward a life that is balanced, purposeful, and sustainable at the individual, communal, and broader societal levels.
