THE PROMOTION OF THE SAPPAYA PRINCIPLES IN TEMPLE ADMINISTRATION OF THE SANGHA IN KHAO CHAISON DISTRICT, PHATTHALUNG PROVINCE

Abstract
The objectives of this research were (1) to study the concepts of temple administration and management of the Sangha in Khao Chaison District, Phatthalung Province, (2) to examine the principle of Sappaya as presented in the Theravada Buddhist scriptures, and (3) to promote the application of the Sappaya priciple in the temple administration and management of the Sangha in Khao Chaison District, Phatthalung Province. This study employe a qualitative research methodology. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 20 key informants and analyzed using content analysis.
Findings were as follows:
- The concepts of temple administration of the Sangha in Khao Chaison District, Phatthalung Province were based on orderliness, transparency, and systematic management. The administration covered four main aspects: governance, religious education, propagation, and public utilities. The abbot played a crucial role in policy formulation, development planning, asset supervision in accordance with the Vinaya, and fostering collaboration with the community, aiming to develop the temple as a spiritual center and a learning hub for the public.
- The Four Sappaya principles, as found in Buddhist scriptures, refer to conducive conditions that support living and spiritual practice. These consist of: (1) Avasa-sappaya (suitable environment), (2) Bhojana-sappaya (appropriate food), (3) Puggala-sappaya (supportive persons), and (4) Dhamma-sappaya (suitable Dhamma activities). These principles serve as key factors contributing to effective temple administration.
- The promotion of the Four Sappāya principles in temple administration was implemented concretely through environmental improvement, proper and sufficient food management, fostering positive relationships between monks and the community, and organizing appropriate Dhamma activities for target groups. These practices enhanced the efficiency, orderliness, and sustainability of temple administration and contributed to the advancement of Buddhism.
