THE EFFECTS OF UNITED STATES RECIPROCAL TARIFFS ON THE COMPETITIVENESS OF THAI EXPORTS IN THE UNITED STATES MARKET
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research aimed to examine the changes in the competitiveness of major Thai exports in the United States market under the United States reciprocal tariff measures. Competitiveness was measured using the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) index and market share, which are widely used indicators for measuring international trade competitiveness. This study employed a quantitative research approach using international trade data obtained from the International Trade Center database, including Thailand’s export data and United States import data. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, market share analysis, and the Revealed Comparative Advantage index in order to evaluate the competitiveness of Thai exports in the United States market.
The results indicated that the United States reciprocal tariffs affected the competitiveness of Thai exports in structural terms. Tariff measures increased the prices of Thai products in the United States market, which reduced price competitiveness and affected market share. Although the export value of some Thai products continued to increase and maintained market share in the United States market, the analysis based on the Revealed Comparative Advantage index showed that Thailand’s overall competitiveness tended to decline when compared with major competing countries that received tariff preferences. The findings suggest that tariff measures have long-term effects on the structure of trade competitiveness. Therefore, Thailand should adjust its international trade policy by focusing on product quality development, value-added production, and export market diversification in order to maintain and enhance the competitiveness of Thai exports in the global market.
