TITLE THE ROLE OF BUDDHIST MONKS IN NAVIGATING INTERNATIONAL CONFLICTS A CASE STUDY OF RELIGIOUS DIPLOMACY AND PEACEBUILDING IN THAI-CAMBODIAN BORDER RELATIONS (2025-2026)

Abstract
This article explores the role of Buddhist monks as influential non-state actors in international conflict management, using the 2025-2026 Thai-Cambodian border crisis as a primary case study. Framed by Johan Galtung's peace theories and John Paul Lederach's “infrastructure for peace,” the study identifies monks as “moral mediators” and “peace messengers” navigating intense digital nationalism. The findings highlight their dual role in conflict prevention through cultural diplomacy and post-conflict reconciliation via humanitarian aid for displaced persons. Despite constraints from state structures and political instrumentalization, Buddhist non-violence and “Track 1.5 diplomacy” involving clergy demonstrate a significant capacity to mitigate structural violence and foster sustainable coexistence within the ASEAN region.
