MANAGEMENT OF WASTEWATER IN THE COMMUNITY OF KOKE TUM SUBDISTRICT, MUEANG DISTRICT, LOPBURI PROVINCE

Abstract

Research Findings.This research study had two main objectives:To examine the problems related to wastewater management among residents in the Khok Tum Subdistrict Municipality, Mueang District, Lopburi Province; and To explore the potential approaches for wastewater management in the same area.The study employed a qualitative research method, using in-depth interviews with 17 key informants, divided into two groups: service providers and service recipients. The data were analyzed descriptively by synthesizing, interpreting, and summarizing key issues.

1. 1. Current Problems in Wastewater Management

          Most residents lack knowledge and awareness regarding proper wastewater management. They commonly use traditional methods, such as discharging wastewater directly onto the ground or into natural water sources, especially in agricultural areas. The primary issue stems from economic limitations, preventing households from investing in wastewater treatment systems. Furthermore, there is a lack of proper equipment and appropriate technology, and there is no centralized wastewater treatment system in many communities. Although the municipality has provided training and distributed grease traps to households participating in related projects, public participation remains low.

1. 2. Proposed Approaches to Wastewater Management

          The proposed strategies consist of four main aspects 1) Human aspect Promote awareness and knowledge through training, public relations, and the use of multiple media channels, with community leaders serving as intermediaries. 2) Financial aspect Seek financial support from the government and private sector, focusing on the provision of equipment rather than direct cash distribution. 3) Equipment and technology aspect Provide and distribute basic wastewater treatment equipment, such as grease traps, and encourage the use of technology suited to the community’s context. 4)Management aspect Develop wastewater treatment systems appropriate to the local context and build collaborative networks among communities, government agencies, and private organizations. Also, use both online platforms and local broadcasting tools to disseminate information widely within the community.
