THE THREEFOLD TRAINING (TRISIKKHĀ): A NEW PARADIGM FOR INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITY DESIGN
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article aims to present the concept of the Threefold Training (Tri-Sikkha) as a new paradigm for designing learning activities. It examines the application of the Threefold Training comprising Morality (Sīla), Concentration (Samādhi), and Wisdom (Paññā) as a conceptual framework for learning design in contemporary educational contexts. This exploration is prompted by current educational paradigms that overemphasize academic achievement, consequently segregating behavioral, moral, mental, and self-aware development from the core learning process. Utilizing documentary analysis and a synthesis of Buddhist Dhamma principles alongside modern learning design concepts, this study elucidates the potential of the Threefold Training in fostering holistic learner development.
The findings indicate that: (1)The Threefold Training should not be perceived merely as moral content to be interspersed within instruction, but rather as an foundational infrastructure for designing learning activities. (2) Morality, concentration, and wisdom can be cultivated simultaneously within a single activity through the strategic design of rules, participatory processes, mindfulness practices, and systematic reflection. (3)The role of educators must transition from knowledge transmitters to learning experience designers who facilitate students' behavioral, mental, and intellectual development. (4)The Threefold Training can be developed into a new paradigm for learning activity design that harmoniously integrates cognitive, moral, and emotional growth. Consequently, this article proposes a guideline for designing learning activities based on the Threefold Training, utilizing the "Action, Pause, and Connect" process and reflective thinking as vital mechanisms to promote deep learning. This approach ultimately aims to foster sustainable learner development, cultivating knowledgeable, responsible, mindful, and self-directed lifelong learners.
