Abstract

This research article aimed to: 1) study the problems and happiness enhancement of the elderly; 2) develop a process for enhancing the happiness of the elderly through meditation practice principles; and 3) analyze guidelines for enhancing the happiness of the elderly through meditation practice principles. This study employed a participatory action research approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 19 key informants and analyzed using content analysis within the contextual framework.

The research findings revealed that: 1) In terms of enhancing happiness among the elderly, good health and quality of life are essential factors. Elderly individuals with good health are able to take care of themselves effectively and receive health promotion and disease prevention support in order to maintain their well-being. Services provided for this group aim to promote both physical and mental happiness by providing information, news, and knowledge regarding appropriate self-care practices, as well as support, encouragement, and guidance for behavioral adjustment. These services can be implemented both in healthcare facilities and within the community. 2) Regarding the process of enhancing happiness among the elderly through meditation practice principles, opportunities were created for elderly individuals to participate in activities integrating Buddhist principles to strengthen social well-being and promote healthy bodies and cheerful minds within Ban Khlong Muen Chaem Community, Bangkok. Activities included the establishment of a health garden to promote the health of elderly people in the community, encouraging them to participate together in communal activity spaces. Various activities were organized, such as community tree planting, exercise programs, and relationship-building activities involving all age groups within the community. 3) Concerning the guidelines for enhancing happiness among the elderly through meditation practice principles, it was found that local organizations and community leaders should support community-driven activities and learning processes. Such activities may include vocational training programs that match the interests of the elderly, which contribute positively to physical health, mental well-being, and income generation. These activities help elderly individuals gain knowledge, develop self-worth, and cultivate self-esteem. Mental development is considered of the utmost importance because the mind directs and controls all behaviors. Mental liberation, providing emotional outlets, and the cultivation of wisdom encompass a wide range of dimensions and developmental levels. Wisdom enables individuals to live effectively, achieve success, understand information and various disciplines clearly and accurately, and attain meaningful learning experiences.
