DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROCESS OF TRANSFERRING KNOWLEDGE OF CREATIVE PALM LEAF MANUSCRIPT WRAPPING TO YOUTH IN PHRAE PROVINCE

Abstract

This research aimed to: (1) examine the local wisdom of making cloth wrappers for palm-leaf manuscripts in Phrae Province; (2) develop a creative knowledge-transmission process for conveying this local wisdom to youth in Phrae Province; and (3) present a creative process for transmitting knowledge of palm-leaf manuscript cloth wrapping to youth in the province. The study employed a mixed-methods research design, integrating documentary research, qualitative research, and action research. A total of 68 key informants participated in the study, including monks, local wisdom teachers, and youth involved in the knowledge-transmission activities. Data were analyzed through content analysis in conjunction with contextual interpretation.

The findings revealed that:

1) the local wisdom of making cloth wrappers for palm-leaf manuscripts in Phrae Province represents traditional knowledge reflecting strong faith in Buddhism. The primary purpose of these cloth wrappers is to protect palm-leaf manuscripts from dust, moisture, insects, and abrasion, thereby extending the lifespan of the fragile palm leaves. Traditionally, materials such as unbleached cotton cloth, handwoven textiles, silk, and chok patterned fabrics were used. In contemporary practice, more elaborate decorative patterns have been introduced, and in some areas of Phrae Province, teakwood coated with lacquer and gold leaf has been used to wrap palm-leaf manuscripts for greater durability.

2) The development of the knowledge-transmission process has evolved from informal learning through elders possessing traditional expertise to more structured transmission targeting youth. This process incorporates modern technology to record production methods, with monks and skilled local wisdom teachers serving as knowledge transmitters. Designs have been adapted to be more contemporary, and new materials have been introduced while preserving the original symbolic meanings. Additionally, cloth wrappers have been transformed into cultural souvenir products.

3) The creative knowledge-transmission process for youth in Phrae Province emphasizes raising awareness of Lanna cultural heritage, developing practical skills in making cloth wrappers for palm-leaf manuscripts, fostering cultural conservation awareness, enhancing youth creativity, and linking traditional wisdom with contemporary contexts. This process integrates art, culture, and creativity through experiential learning activities, learning from local sages, creative production, and reflective presentation.
