THE GROWTH AND ROLE OF CHINESE CAPITAL BUSINESSES IN THAILAND’S FRUIT EXPORTS

Abstract

This article explores the growth and role of Chinese capital businesses in the export of Thai durians, particularly in the context where China has become the primary market with continuously rising demand. Chinese investors have increasingly played a significant role in the durian supply chain from purchasing at the orchard level, sorting, and packaging, to export by investing in packing houses, leasing or contracting with farmers, and controlling product standards to meet Chinese market requirements. The study proposes the need for balanced policy formulation between trade liberalization and the protection of Thai farmers’ interests. This includes implementing land ownership regulations, supporting farmers to form cooperatives for direct market access, and establishing mechanisms to regulate foreign businesses under Thai legal frameworks. These measures aim to create long-term stability and sustainability for Thailand’s durian export industry, economically, in terms of food security, and in the context of ASEAN-China relations.
