PATHWAY TO FINAL STAGE OF LIFE FOR INMATE DIAGNOSED WITH LIFE – THREATENING DISEASE

Abstract

This research aimed to: 1) explore the end-of-life experiences of inmates with terminal illnesses in prison, and 2) propose guidelines for improving the care system for terminally ill inmates. This study employed qualitative research methods. Initially, relevant documents were reviewed, followed by in-depth interviews conducted to gather additional data.

          The findings revealed that: 1) the end-of-life path of terminally ill inmates was analyzed through the framework of palliative care, considering aspects such as treatment, prison healthcare management policies, rights and welfare, and the legal and ethical contexts related to the treatment of terminally ill prisoners. The study was conducted through academic literature reviews, palliative care processes, and existing guidelines from the Department of Corrections. 2) The current healthcare system for terminally ill inmates faces various limitations, including a shortage of medical personnel, delayed access to health services, and complicated procedures for humanitarian release. This article thus provides an analysis of palliative care systems for terminally ill inmates and revisits policies to ensure alignment with human rights principles. It also proposes ways to enhance the system so that inmates at the end of life are treated with dignity and humanity.
