BUDDHISM AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF MORALITY AND ETHICS IN THE EDUCATION SYSTEM

Abstract
The academic article entitled “Buddhism and the Promotion of Morality and Ethics in the Education System” aims to study the concepts, Buddhist principles, and their application in developing morality and ethics within the Thai education system. Currently, Thai society is facing a moral decline, particularly among youth who represent the future of the nation. Education plays a crucial role in shaping individuals with morality, ethics, and social responsibility. Buddhism, as the national religion of Thailand, offers core teachings that can be suitably applied to cultivate the minds and behavior of students.
This article presents approaches to fostering morality and ethics through key Buddhist principles, including the Five Precepts (Sīla 5) as the foundation for proper conduct, the Four Brahmavihāras to promote loving-kindness and compassion towards others, the Four Sangahavatthus to encourage unity and mutual support in society, and the Four Iddhipādas to instill perseverance and determination in learning and life. The article also emphasizes the integration of these principles into teaching and learning processes, student development activities, and the role of teachers as moral role models.
The expected outcomes of applying Buddhist principles in education are the development of students with strong moral character and social responsibility, as well as the creation of a school environment conducive to goodness and virtue. Ultimately, this will lead to sustainable development of society in the future.
