This article aimed to study 1) the current application status of ChatGPT-assisted instruction among English teachers in higher vocational colleges in Sichuan Province, and 2) the comparative effectiveness of ChatGPT-assisted teaching versus traditional lecture-based instruction in improving higher vocational English education. The sample consisted of 240 students from three vocational colleges, divided into a control group and an experimental group with 120 students each. Participants were selected through stratified purposive sampling to ensure institutional representation and baseline equivalence. The instruments for collecting data included pre-tests, mid-tests, post-tests, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent-sample t-tests, and content analysis.

The research results were as follows:

  1. Teachers indicated that ChatGPT was most effective for grammar correction, vocabulary development, and reading comprehension activities, whereas its perceived utility for reasoning in writing was moderate and its efficacy for oral expression was rated the lowest. Usage remained constrained owing to concerns regarding accuracy verification, plagiarism, disparities in digital literacy, and inadequate institutional support.

  2. Comparative post-test results indicated that students in the ChatGPT-assisted group attained substantially greater levels of learning engagement and satisfaction with the instructional model compared to those receiving traditional instruction (p < .05). Experimental groups across all three colleges consistently demonstrated superior performance compared to control groups.

  3. Students who received ChatGPT-supported instruction demonstrated significantly higher grammar proficiency scores across all grade levels, with all t-tests indicating statistically meaningful improvements (p < .05). These findings validate that instruction facilitated by ChatGPT improves language accuracy and student engagement more effectively than traditional lecture-based approaches in higher vocational English education.
