Abstract

When it comes to the role of monks in Thai society, the image of monks who are austere in temples and monasteries may be the first thing that comes to mind. However, if we look back into history, especially in the Ayutthaya period, we will find that monks played a much more important role. They were not only the center of religion, but were also deeply involved in politics, governance, and social movements. Some monks were advisors to the king, some were negotiators during wars, while some even played a role in the change of throne. In addition, monks were spiritual leaders of the people, providing comfort and being the center of faith during times of national crisis, or even leading the people in resisting enemies. In this review, we will consider the various roles of monks in that era, both as mediators and protectors of religion and as those drawn into political power games, in order to understand why monks were more than just religious practitioners and had a long-lasting influence on Thai society. Therefore, the book under review, “Monks and Thai Society in the Ayutthaya Period” by Phra Maha Yutthana Narachetto, Ph.D.9, Ph.D., will be a guideline that will help Buddhists and those interested, regardless of race or religion, to understand this book and provide educational benefits as a source of information about Buddhism for those interested in the future. It will continue to preserve Buddhism so that it can exist in the world. Forever and ever
