ANALYSIS OF BELIEFS AND RITUALS OF WORSHIPING PHRA THAT NANG PHEN AND THEIR IMPACT ON THE WAY OF LIFE OF THE WAT KO KAEW COMMUNITY, PHEN DISTRICT, UDON THANI PROVINCE

Abstract

This research aims to 1.study the beliefs and rituals associated with the worship of relics in Theravāda Buddhism, 2.examine the current state of beliefs and rituals related to the worship of Phra That Nang Phen in the Wat Koh Kaew community, Phen District, Udon Thani Province, and 3.analyze the influence of these beliefs and rituals on the way of life in the Wat Koh Kaew community. This study adopts a qualitative research approach, collecting data from documents and interviews with 30 key informants using structured interview guidelines. The collected data is then analyzed through comparative analysis to identify relationships between different aspects.

          Research Findings:

1. Beliefs and Rituals of Worshiping Relics The beliefs and rituals surrounding the worship of relics are rooted in faith in Buddhism, considering relics as sacred symbols of the Buddha with divine power that bring auspiciousness. Important rituals include circumambulation, offerings to the Buddha, and gilding relics, which reflect the connection between religion and local culture. In the context of the Wat Koh Kaew community, beliefs about Phra That Nang Phen are associated with luck, health, and protection from misfortune. Significant rituals include making wishes, offering tribute, and participating in Bun Bang Fai (rocket festival), all of which highlight the relationship between religion and the community’s way of life.


2. The Current State of Beliefs and Rituals in the Worship of Phra That Nang Phen The traditions and rituals surrounding Phra That Nang Phen continue to be preserved within the Wat Koh Kaew community. These beliefs remain connected to luck, health, and the prevention of misfortune. Rituals such as making wishes, offering sacred objects, and conducting the Bun Bang Fai festival are still practiced to maintain spiritual and communal harmony.


3. The Influence of Beliefs and Rituals on the Community's Way of Life Individual Aspect: These beliefs provide psychological stability and emotional support. Social Aspect: They foster community unity and the preservation of cultural traditions. Economic Aspect: Religious activities stimulate local economic activities. Moral Aspect: The beliefs encourage an awareness of merit and sin, strengthening religious consciousness among community members.
